Join Tournant and Momentum River Expeditions on the Wild and Scenic California Salmon this spring for an active farm-to-fire-to-table gourmet river safari. Combine one of the most spectacular class V trips in the country, our comfortable pop-up base camp, and Tournant’s seasonal farm to fire communal feasts. This might be the most unique wilderness gourmet trip in the country.
The California Salmon combines beautiful, lush coastal scenery, an intimate, marble-smooth, granite inner gorge, a seemingly endless number of waterfalls cascading in from above, emerald-green waters, a comfortable pop-up base camp with hot showers and a wood-fired sauna (think ‘glamping’ or luxury camping) and unequaled class IV-V pool-drop whitewater. This is truly a world-class, high-adventure whitewater run. Our trips combines the Salmon with the Class V Scott River and/or the spectacularly beautiful Clear Creak to become one of the ultimate (and most comfortable) class V adventures in the country.
Jaret Foster and Mona Johnson of Tournant seek to inspire people who love food to care about the many hands who farm, fish, forage and craft it, deepening their connection to the source through seasonal farm to fire cooking. After years spent cooking in restaurants on both coasts, they met while working at the Portland Farmers Market. And their passion for community and cooking from the source led them to create an open fire cooking and events company. Cooked over live fire and served outdoors in nature, their meals are guided by the seasons and local bounty from land and sea. And their farm-to-fire dining experiences create space for guests to slow down, connect, savor the moment, and create lasting memories.
Tournant will be the chefs and hosts and each afternoon we will pull into our unique and comfortable riverside ‘pop-up’ base camp set deep in the Salmon River canyon. There are walk-in tents with cots set among the trees, a tented eating and hang out area, hot showers, a sauna, an outdoor bar, and a big fire burning. The late afternoon can be spent hiking, biking, and playing games in the sun. For those who like road and mountain biking (and have the energy after a hard day of paddling) the narrow and remote roads in the area offer beautiful riding. Or, for those looking to unwind, grab a towel and head over to our sauna trailer, rinse off in the shower, grab a drink at the bar, and relax by the fire and watch as the Tournant crew prepares dinner. The evening will start with interactive fire appetizers and a shared a feast cooked over the flames, followed by desert and drinks, and capped off with a comfortable night under a sky far away from any city lights.
Join us this spring for an active culinary adventure with three days of big whitewater, lots of activity options, a spectacular canyon, comfortable nights at our safari style pop-up camp, and multi-course, seasonal feasts served in a dining room where the sky is the ceiling.
And for what might be the most unique and active wilderness gourmet trip in the country…
