Why choose us on the Middle Owyhee?

The Middle Owyhee is a classic Momentum spring trip – one that highlights our guiding experience and expedition roots. It is remote, very rarely run, with the kind of challenging logistics that we relish. On many years we are the only company to run a trip. We truly love showing people this place.

Our Middle Owyhee Trip Featured On Oregon Field Guide

oregon-field-guideCheck out the most remote river in the lower 48 on OPB’s popular “Oregon Field Guide”. They joined us to raft the Middle Owyhee and as usual the trip did not disappoint.

This is one of the most incredible and rarely run river trips in the country. A Middle Owyhee trip is for those who are looking for isolated wilderness, spectacularly dramatic landscapes, and plenty of excitement. Set in sheer-walled, awe-inspiring, rhyolite gorges are rapids such as Half Mile, Bombshelter, and Raft Flip. The climax comes at a rapid called Widowmaker, a class-V drop filled with powerful hydraulics and large boulders. Like the Lower Owyhee, the Middle also features hot springs, abundant wildlife, and beautiful side hikes. This river trip is a true wilderness experience, an expedition style trip, and a journey to one of the most remote lands in the lower 48 states. The Middle Owyhee is a great choice for those with prior rafting experience or adventurous beginners in good physical condition.

Please note:
Access to the Middle Owyhee becomes difficult in adverse weather; to allow maintain the highest level of safety, we reserve the right to switch the trip to the Lower section if necessary. Also a portage of Widowmaker Rapid is generally necessary. Because of this we must pack lighter then on most of our trips. All Middle Owyhee trips feature a high Guest to Guide ratio.

Recent Testimonials

  • "If you ever get the chance to do this fantastic trip, jump on it as hard as you can. This incredible place is only available for rafting at high water during snowmelt, which some years doesn't happen - or the window is very short. Yes, it's cold, and yes, it's wet. But what does one expect in the early spring in the Pacific Northwest? Just frickin' do it!" - Gordon Sheets
  • "I just finished a 4 day Middle Owyhee trip and can't speak highly enough of the Momentum team. We booked over a year ago but the 2018 trip was cancelled due to low water. Momentum allowed us to choose from a different trip that year or booking the Middle Owyhee for 2019. It was more than worth the wait. The staff is friendly and responsive to pre-trip questions. The guides are experienced, well-traveled and exceptional communicators. The food was excellent and the camps were in great locations on the river. I'm looking forward to the my next Momentum trip, hopefully sooner rather than later." - Zac Monahan
  • "Hi Pete- We are still high from our trip with down the Middle Owyhee! Being from Alaska we were wondering what the wilderness experience would be like and it was blow-out magical. The portage was something out of some ultimate challenge obstacle course and you all made it look like you do it every day. I would also like to thank you for your careful approach to safety without compromising any fun or sense of adventure. Cool, calm, man of few words, but just enough, Pete, you could also be a floatplane pilot! Our sincere thanks again, to you, Eric, Mike and Sam." - Sam
