Rafting on Oregon's Illinois River....
We have a new spring trip that we are very excited about! This April we will start running 4-day wilderness trips on the Illinois River in Southern Oregon. Although it has been seen by very few the Wild and Scenic Illinois River is considered by some to be the best wilderness rafting trip in the country. Few rivers can match its combination of extreme isolation, solitude, beauty, and whitewater. We are excited and honored to offer trips down this spectacular Pacific Northwest River.
The Illinois has a lower elevation snow pack so the rafting season is in April and early May (before the water drops too low). The trips are small with a high guide to guest ratio. We have three dates for this spring – you can read more about the trip below.!
If you have any questions about the Illinois give us a call or an email – the trips are coming up soon!

The Illinois 4-Day – Class 4+ (V) - One of the great wilderness river journeys in the country - some say the best.Great for experienced and adventurous beginners in good health - Ages 16+. Offered spring only: April to mid June
Visit our new Illinois River Page for more info.

Our Winter Newsletter is out

>>Winter 2008

winter-rafting.jpg
Winter rafting! A beautiful day on the Umpqua. We were a bit surprised by the amount of snow – normally there is no snow at this elevation – we had to go 25 miles downstream just to get to a spot where we could make it to the river without a plow!

Hello from one of the snowiest places in the west (this year at least)!

How are you? We hope everyone is having an amazing winter! We have had a two-week break from the snow, but we have been hammered this winter and there is more snow on the way! This means we should have a long fun season on our spring rivers like the Cal Salmon and Owyhee. It is going to be an unbelievable spring!

Our winter has been really busy. We have developed some new trips (we are excited about these!), are once again working on a couple of new rivers, have updated our web site (more to come), will soon be offering the ability to book trips and make payments online, are becoming a “Carbon Neutral” company, and of course we have been working on new meals for the spring.

Below there is more info on all our projects and of course info on all our spring trips. Many of you already know this, but spring is the time to see many of the best rivers in the west

Bookings for all our spring trips are already coming in (some Salmon and Owyhee dates are very full) so if you are interested or have questions give us a call or an email!

We hope to see you in the spring!

Kind Regards ,

Pete and the staff of
Momentum River Expeditions

SPRING RAFTING TRIPS

california-salmon-6.jpgThe California Salmon 2 to 4-DayEvery spring starts with this one. It is our favorite and we can’t wait! The Salmon is one of the most spectacular rafting trips in the country; it is world-class whitewater in our back yard. The canyon is spectacular and the rapids are amazing; it's a magical place. 3-day options include a day on the rarely run class V Scott River or the amazing Clear Creek. This makes the trip one of the premier class V adventures in the country!

New For This Year!: California Salmon Lodge Trips: We have partnered with Marble Mountain Ranch to offer super comfortable early season lodge trips on the Salmon. See everything the Salmon has to offer and then spend your evenings above the Klamath in a comfortable lodge. These trips are also available on other dates for groups of 10 or more.

The Salmon has a relatively short season and the trips are booking up fast. So, even if you are just interested but not sure yet drop us an email or give us a call with a date range so we can warn you if the trip starts getting full.

There is more Cal Salmon info at the California Salmon Rafting Page.
Also check out Erik Meldrum's pictures from a trip last year: http://picasaweb.google.com/erikmeldrum/CalSalmonMay19202007.

owyhee-river.jpgThe Lower Owyhee 5-day The Grand Canyon of Oregon - a 5-day wilderness journey through one of the most remote canyons in the continental U.S. with hot springs, beautiful side hikes, petroglyphs, and fun mild rapids (a great family option). We have trips scheduled in April and early May.

Like the Salmon the Owyhee trips are filling quickly.

There is more Owyhee info at the Owyhee River Rafting Page.

middleowyheeriver-small.jpgThe Middle Owyhee This is one of the most exotic and rarely run river trips in the country. It combines dramatic dark sheer canyon walls, big rapids, and it is even more remote then the Lower. This trip was featured on OPB’s Oregon Field Guide. While there is only one class V rapid the remoteness makes it a true expedition.

There is more Owyhee info at the Middle River Rafting Page.

clearcreek.jpgLower Klamath / Clear Creek 3-Day Inflatable Kayaking - New For This Year! - High spring water adventure trips on the Lower Klamath. We start our trip on a spectacularly beautiful, remote, and extremely rarely run tributary of the Klamath. Once we meet the Klamath we continue down stream and enjoy the river at higher spring flows. The trip offers perfect rapids for Inflatable Kayaking, spectacular mountain scenery, beautiful side hikes, a staggering amount of wildlife, and a chance to run a stretch of river that is rarely seen (or even heard of!).

There is more info at the Klamath River Kayaking Page.
Also check out Erik Meldrum's pictures from one of our first Clear Creek trips last year:: http://picasaweb.google.com/erikmeldrum/ClearCreekMay212007

Our Summer Rafting Newsletter is Out
Our summer newsletter is out below or here. We also have some pictures from this springs trips.
Here is a a text version:

Summer 07

Hello Everyone!

Summer is here and we hope everyone is enjoying the long days and sunshine!

Many of you are probably aware that the lack of snow in the west this winter will make for some low water rafting throughout much of the west coast. However we are excited to say that this is definitely not the case for the Upper and Lower Klamath! Full reservoirs and new regulations meant to protect the Salmon fisheries means that the Klamath River will have more then enough water all summer. The Upper Klamath will have the same “big turbine” release as last year which means big water (even more then in years past) and an overall whitewater run that will be second to none in the west - fourteen churning miles including 9 of back-to-back class 4 and 4+ rapids! The Lower Klamath will have perfect flows for family rafting trips and high adventure inflatable kayaking (which is really getting popular this year).

We had a ton of interest this spring in our winter trips to Chile. Our 2008 dates are set (see below) and many of you who expressed interest will soon be getting a DVD and trip info in the mail. If you did not talk to us about it and are interested give us a call or an email.

To everyone who joined us this spring THANK YOU! We had a short spring season because of the low snow pack, but the trips were amazing and they set the framework for some really cool 2008 trip options (i.e. Clear Creek). If you want to see some great pictures from this spring click here.

Below there is more info on the Upper Klamath, Lower K and Chile. Many of our summer trips are filling fast so give us a call!

Have a great summer and hopefully we will see you soon!

Momentum River Expeditions

SUMMER TRIPS

The Upper Klamath
The Upper Klamath River is definitely the most exciting summer class-IV trip in the West. Join us and see why this run’s fame and popularity grows every year.
For info, visit our Upper Klamath page.

Lower Klamath Trips

2 to 4 days in remote and beautiful Northern California. It is the perfect introduction to rafting, river travel, and camping. With activities ranging from fireside stories and games to days playing in the warm water, the Lower Klamath is a wonderful place to share an adventure with your family.

Lower Klamath Inflatable Kayak Trip
The Lower K is a beautiful down river trip (meaning all of our gear is in rafts and each night we camp along sandy beaches) and its rapids, while mild in rafts, are perfect and exciting for inflatable kayaks. We love inflatable kayaking and guests that joined us last year have been raving about them. It’s just you, your kayak, your recently learned skills, rapids at “face” level, and guides leading the way giving you tips, encouragement, and a helping hand when needed. This trip is a great chance to learn a new skill and see an amazing stretch of river.

Thank You All For A Great Spring!
It is has been a while since our last post. We were enjoying a short but very sweet spring rafting season! Our snow pack in Northern California was only about 35% of normal but a nice steady melt and some amazing guests made for great trips through May including a day inflatable kayaking the South Fork. On the Owyhee in far eastern Oregon the snow pack was even worse and we were looking at the strong possibility of not being able to run even one trip. But after discussions with guests, guides, and long looks at the weather we decided to go for a 450 cfs shot on the Lower Owyhee. The group battled wind, a little snow, very low water, and had what seems to be our most warmly received trip of the year (a few have already booked another trip this summer)!
So, to everyone who joined us rafting this spring on the California Salmon, The Owyhee, Clear Creek, and the Klamath - THANK YOU!

There is still space on some Cal Salmon trips that will have great water
There is still space on our April 27th and May 4th California Salmon / Scott River combo trips. There should be great water on both of those weekends! Also during the May trip there will be a Down river raft race going on that should be great fun to watch.

Rafting The Class V California Salmon
The Cal Salmon snow pack got a great boost at the beginning of the month and, while our season might be a little shorter then normal, it should be great in April and May! Our trips still have room, but are starting to fill up. Give us a call of you are interested!

Back From Chile's Futaleufu!
We are back from another amazing trip in Chile. The Futaleufu had water as low as we have ever seen it (still at least 6000 cfs though!) and it allowed us to run the Class V inferno canyon for the first time in 2 years. The canyon included a new rapid created by a landslide that had not been run in a raft until our trip!
Our 2008 dates should be up soon!

Our 2007 Winter Newsletter Is Out
Our newsletter is out and you can check it out here. Below is the text version of the newsletter.
Hope everyone is enjoying there winter!

Hello and Happy New Year From Southern Oregon!

How are you? We hope you are all having a great winter! At the moment I am taking a break from end-of-year accounting so my head does not explode (writing this and thinking about spring is way more fun).

Our winter has been really busy and filled with a ton of different projects. We are working on new permits and a possible new river, on making our overnight trips even more comfortable (3” sleeping pads!!!), testing our new meals for 07 (a.k.a. dinner parties:), getting more inflatable kayaks and developing more “IK Friendly” itineraries (people are loving the kayaking), and of course getting ready for Chile in February.

Below there is more info on all the projects keeping us busy and of course a run down on our spring trips (spring is our favorite time of year). Bookings for all of these trips are already coming in and some dates are filling up fast so if you are interested give us a call or an email.

We hope to see you this spring!
Cheers,

Pete and the staff of
Momentum River Expeditions

SPRING TRIPS

The California Salmon
Every spring starts with this one. It is our favorite and we can’t wait! The Salmon is one of the most spectacular rafting trips in the country; it is world-class whitewater in our back yard. The canyon is spectacular and the rapids are amazing; it's a magical place. This year we have some additions to our trips. The first is that we will hopefully, forest service permitting, have a "permanent" base camp in one of the most beautiful sections of the canyon - this means more amenities (like a sauna!) and more comfort. Also, for the April and May start dates we have added a 3-day option that includes a day on the rarely run class V Scott River. This makes the trip one of the premier class V adventures in the country! The Salmon has a relatively short season and the trips are booking up fast. So, even if you are just interested but not sure yet drop us an email or give us a call with a date range so we can warn you if the trip starts getting full.
There is more Cal Salmon info at the California Salmon Rafting Page.

The Owyhee River - The Grand Canyon Of Oregon

We have two trips:
The Lower: a 5-day wilderness journey through one of the most remote canyons in the continental U.S. with hot springs, beautiful side hikes, petroglyphs, and fun mild rapids (a great family option). We have trips scheduled in April and early May
The Middle: This is one of the most exotic and rarely run river trips in the country. It combines dramatic dark sheer canyon walls, big rapids, and it is even more remote then the Lower. One of last year’s trips was featured on OPB’s Oregon Field Guide. This is a true wilderness experience. Like the Salmon these trips are already filling quickly. We have trips scheduled in April and early May.

For both of these trips other spring dates are available for groups of 8 or more.
There is more Owyhee River info at our Owyhee River Rafting page.

The Scott

We had an unbelievable Scott season last year and it is quickly becoming one of our favorites. The Scott is an incredible and seldom run river with very technical and continuous class IV and V rapids and a beautiful canyon. We have made the Scott a standard option on our April and May Cal Salmon trips and it can also be run as a one day.
There is more Scott River info at the Scott River Rafting page.

Lower Klamath Early Season Inflatable Kayak Trip

The Lower K is a beautiful down river trip (meaning all of our gear is in rafts and each night we camp along sandy beaches) and its rapids, while mild in rafts, are perfect and exciting for inflatable kayaks. We love inflatable kayaking and guests that joined us last year have been raving about them. It’s just you, your kayak, your recently learned skills, rapids at “face” level, and guides leading the way giving you tips, encouragement, and a helping hand when needed. This trip is a great chance to learn a new skill and see an amazing stretch of river at higher flows, when nobody else is around, and when the canyon is full of spring color. We have a June 16th date set for a spring kayak trip and all our summer dates are open for kayaking.
Read more about Lower K Inflatable Kayaking

“Build Your Own Trips”
One of our goals when starting Momentum was to run lots of small custom trips. Well, it's happening and we want to keep it going! If you have a group of 8 or more give us a call and we can help you build your own trip. You can mix and match, we do airport pick-ups, etc. One of the more popular ones last year was a 4 day trip that included 3-days of inflatable kayaking on the Lower Klamath and 1-day of rafting on the Upper K.

NEWS

- We have a downloadable printable brochure – You can print the whole thing here, or each rivers page has a link to the brochure of that river. They are pretty!

- More comfortable trips! – This has been one of our biggest winter projects. 3” sleeping pads (its like sleeping at home), new tents, new showers (that really work well), and little kitchen gadgets (like a portable blender for morning smoothies!).

- A New Trip? – We hope so! We are working with the Forest Service and Local residents on a permit to start running inflatable kayaking trips on the Applegate River. Hopefully we will have it this summer. Here is a quick blurb:
Applegate Inflatable Kayaking – Class IV
It’s just you, your recently learned skills, rapids at “face” level, and guides leading the way. Pilot your inflatable kayak through two intimate and beautiful rapid-laced mini gorges. Trips are small, unique, and exciting – an “off the beaten path” experience offered only by Momentum. Great for experienced & first-time paddlers in good health. Ages 12+. Offered June - October.
.

- Website Updates / Fancy Newsletter – Our website is always getting better (we hope) and there should be lots of changes in the next few weeks. Including video!

- Environmental Stewardship – From the beginning we have been active in the environmental community both locally and nationally. But now that we are more established we really want to take it to a new level in the coming years. This year, among other things, we are getting more involved with Green Tags and will become a member of 1% for the Planet. The book “Let My People Go Surfing” by Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard has really re-energized and re-inspired us all.

- Erik Meldrum in India – Erik is one of our guides and also takes most of the beautiful photos you see on our site. He is in India for the winter and rumor has it he may be doing a slideshow presentation this spring.

Our 2006 Fall Newsletter Is Out
Our newsletter is out and you can check it out here. You can also see some photos from this year here. Below is the text version of the newsletter.

Hello and Thank You!
Thanks to all who joined us this season. We had one of the biggest snow packs in 50 years, a spring season we will not soon forget, and a summer full of great water and weather. Check out a few of the images from this year here.
I want to take a minute to thank you all for not only a great season but for something far more important. One of the things we are proud of here is having extremely experienced and friendly guides that come back year after year. And while we continue to have new faces this is due to us growing, not attrition. Well, it turns out that one of the biggest reasons for this is all of you. You may not realize it, but your personalities, interests, amazing life stories, and choices are shaping Momentum. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard “I love working here because the guests are so cool”. And this news is spreading, when other guides in the area talk about Momentum a main topic is always the people that seem to find us.
So, with your continued support, wonderful personalities, and adventurous spirits we will continue to keep and attract the best guides in the business. We will continue to reshape the way river travel is run and to work towards setting the standard in trip quality and environmental responsibility. And we will continue to run rivers and add adventures that are the best in their class and that are off the beaten path. Beginning and growing Momentum has been full of surprises, but the huge effect of so many good people joining us has been, by far, the best and biggest surprise. Once again thank you all so much!
Below is info on our winter trips to Chile and Costa Rica (are you coming? Fall is here and maybe it is time to think about a winter break and joining us in sunny South America or tropical Central America!). Also below is info on the upcoming “Oregon Field Guide” episode on our Middle Owyhee trip and a way to keep these newsletters out of your “junk” box. For those who are not joining us here this fall (we have trips through September) or are not heading south with us have a wonderful winter and hopefully we will see you next year.

Thanks for an unbelievable year!

Some Rafting Testimonials from spring and early summer
I want to thank you and your crew for a Great and Wonderful trip
down the Lower Owyhee river last week. My son Matt and I had such a
good time. We both agree that it was a true trip of a lifetime. We
started a day late (and that was no real problem) and since Matt and
I were the only clients on the trip and we had three guides and three
rafts, we believe that probably few people ever get to experience
such a truly wonderful trip.... Thank You

I had so much fun on our trip last weekend, I wanted to send you a quick hello and BIG thank you - no wonder Cara raves about you guys! Remembering all the good times and how great you all are made this week at work go by a little bit faster. Plus, I've been singing your praises to everyone I know. I've been trying to think of when I can come up again to do some more rafting - everyone is so welcoming and fun that I feel like I've known you guys forever. Thanks so much for such good times!

I just wanted to thank you and everyone on your team - Glen, Eric, Neil
- and anyone else I've forgotten, for such an awesome weekend. I can't
remember the last time I had that much fun. You have quite an operation
going there - such a class act, and I felt like royalty all weekend!
As you know, I was a fretter and worried about rafting such water as we
did. Now, I can't wait until the next time! I was at ease right away
upon meeting you and the entire crew. Last Chance and Freight Train were
absolutely incredible and I'm having a hard time focusing on work today
because I can't stop thinking about the trip
!

we had a wonderful time....now I want to do this every year :)
Thanks to you and your team for the great day on the river. We had a blast,
and felt very safe and confident with you guys.

Rafting in Chile - Date Changes
We are in the middle of an amazing summer of rafting here in Oregon and Northern California. However we are already looking towards our winter trips in Chile. We put the finishing touches on the new itinerary (it just involves arriving in camp from Argentina instead of Chile) and have a few date changes. You can see the new dates on our Futaleufu Rafting page. We hope to see you there!

New California Salmon Rafting Date!
With all the snow we have again extended our Cal Salmon season! We have a new weekend date on June 23 - 24th. Join us for one of the most amazing river trips in the country!
Here is what guest had to say after last weekend's trip:

Have you rafted the Upper Klamath at "2-GUNS"?
"2-Guns" means they are releasing water from both turbines. Double the normal flow and it should be occurring through June. It is incredible, the canyon itself is a 7 mile, non-stop, luge run through huge standing waves and holes. I can't think of a stretch of whitewater that packs in more whitewater or fun then the Upper K at this level. I just took my family down (for 2 of them it was there first time rafting) and I don't think they stopped yelling and whooping the whole time.

Raft Northern California's Cal Salmon in June!
The Cal Salmon should be running through June this year. Don't miss the rare chance to run one of the west coasts most spectacular rivers in the sun and warm weather of late spring. We still have room, but our weekends are filling up. Read more on our California Salmon rafting page.

Our Adventure on Oregon's Middle Owyhee
Four guides, 3 clients, and a crew from Oregon Public Broadcasting's "Oregon Field Guide" made the journey into the far eastern corner of the state for a rare run on the Middle Owyhee. We call it an expedition style trip and it more then lived up to that description! It began with a 36 mile (3.5 hour?) slog over a slick muddy road after which every guide and client were covered in mud from pushing. We finally got on the river around three and, as usual, were blown away by the canyon. We also were treated to high water, a wrap, and the usual 3 hour portage of Widowmaker rapid.
This is one of those truly magical and wild places. You quickly descend into canyons of dark volcanic rock rising straight out of the water; it is right out of a fantasy novel.
The trip will be shown on Oregon Field Guide sometime in September. We will update everyone when the exact date is released. You can also check out the OPB website.

The "Surfin" South Fork of the Salmon!
We just got off our first Cal Salmon trip of the year. We were joined by SOU students who were working on there outdoor skills program and were we in for a surprise! End of April California Salmon trips are generally cool (to cold) with medium to lower water. Instead we got 80 degree days with the water peeking out at 8000 cfs! At that level the main Salmon was fun to look at but not really an option to raft on. So we headed up stream to the rarely run South Fork. Normally this is a class 3-4 run with only a few real rapids, but with so much water running through the canyon it was a blast. Both our safety cataraft and our training boat had pretty substantial surfs!

Introducing "Green Tags" - Counteract Your Trip Emissions!
New For 2006 - Counteract your trip emissions with Green Tags – We are very excited about this. This program offers us the ability to offset the climate-altering greenhouse gas emissions generated from the trip transportation, by purchasing Green Tags (also called renewable energy credits) from the non-profit Bonneville Environmental Foundation. Green Tag revenues directly support an increase of wind and solar energy onto the power grid. It is only $2 per person and you will be given the “green tags” option when we send you your trip confirmation pack. It will be on our website soon and you can read

Southern Oregon, Northern California Snow Pack Update
The Southern Oregon, Northern California Snow Pack - It is looking quite nice!
Here is some quick estimates (it changes daily):
- Upper Klamath - 185%
- Rogue - 182%
- Owyhee - 151%
- California Salmon - 200% +

Rafting the Owyhee this Season
Have you ever heard of the Owyhee? It is known by some as the Grand Canyon of Oregon but if you haven't heard of it you're not alone! The Owyhee is located in Eastern Oregon and is one of the more remote rivers in the continental US. It also has a very finicky low elevation drainage, meaning that in some years there is not even an Owyhee season.
Well, this year is starting out to be one of the best Owyhee rafting seasons in years. The snowpack is over 150% and the water is high! We offer two trips on the Owyhee, the middle and the lower. Both feature spectacular deep sandstone and basalt canyons, hot springs, and the kind of remote wilderness experience that is becoming more and more rare. The Lower Owyhee is class 3 and is filled with petroglyphs and beautiful sandy camps. The Middle is Class 4-5 and is one of the most rarely run stretches of river in North America. We have trips scheduled in May and Early June. Read more about the Owyhee River and join us for a rare chance to visit this amazing place!

The Oregon and Northern California Snowpack: It keeps GROWING!
The snow continues! I-5 has been closed, the Salmon / Scott basins have received upwards of 36" of new snow! This is going to be an amazing rafting season in the Southern Oregon / Northern California area. We will probably adding some mid and late June Cal Salmon dates and we will be adding some later Owyhee dates.

Our Costa Rica Adventure Vacation
We are almost ready to unveil our Costa Rica itinerary! Chad and Julie are there now checking out a few more things. But, I can tell you what the trip will include: refuting on a rarely run and remote Jungle river called the Sevegre, time in the amazing Drake Bay area- sea kayaking, hiking, snorkeling, and of course some beach time, Rafting on the world famous Pacuare river, and nights in remote and beautiful Jungle lodges.
We wanted to plan a trip that would take you to places that; either would be difficult for you to find, or that would be difficult to get to, that take you away from the normal travel routes, and that are our some our favorite areas in this amazing country.
Dates and prices coming soon!

Back from Chile's Futaleufu Valley!
Hello Everyone,
I'm back from Patagonia's futaleufu. I have to say I was a little depressed about returning, but all this new snow is getting me excited for again for this springs rafting trips. The two futaleufu trips were amazing; great weather, very high water, and wonderful groups of people. It always amazes me watching groups of very different people come away from the valley as fast and sometimes lifelong friends. As always it is a magical place.
2007 Futaleufu Rafting Dates: We are working on dates for 2007. Once again we will have two trips in February.

Reserving Trips: Spring Rafting in Oregon and Northern California
Just a quick note on our spring trips: I am in Chile at the moment, but Chad and Julie are in Southern Oregon busy helping people with their vacation plans and booking rafting trips for spring and summer. We have a 10% pre-season discount going and some of our more popular dates and trips are already close to full (in fact Memorial day on the California Salmon River is full!). So, if you have an idea of a trip you are interested in, even if you are not comitted to it yet, give them a call. They can help with any questions and hold spots while you decide.
Some trips off the top of my head that we are expecially excited about:

The Owyhee River: Both the Lower and Middle. The middle offers some of the best and most remote rafting in all of oregon (and the west coast). And the Lower offers a wonderful spring family trip. Also, this years Oregon snowpack looks like it will be the best in years.

The California Salmon on the third weekend in May: Any weekend on the Salmon is amazing, but for those looking for the biggest water this is usually your best bet. And, while the snowpack for northern California is above average, the snowpack for the Salmon River drainage looks HUGE.

So, check out our Rafting Schedule page and give us a call or an email.

News from Chile and Costa Rica
Hello all. I am sitting here in Puerto Varas, Chile enjoying the sun, my Costa Rican tan, and getting ready to head to the Futaleufu valley for two trips. I was just in Costa Rica for ten days figuring out the details of our new Costa Rica vacation.
Costa Rica is a trip that has been difficult for me to put together . It is a place with so many options, many of them easy to do on your own. However, like any place with a ton of options, there are some not so good ones. What we wanted to do with this vacation was to show you places that are difficult to visit by yourself, that would be difficult to find with out a lot of trial and error, and when put together give you a great taste of the what Costa Rica has to offer and create a truly amazing vacation. We also wanted to avoid, as much as possible, zipping you aroud to too many different places in one relativly short trip. We want to spend enought time in each place to truly enjoy it.

Well, I think we are very close to having the itinereary set and I´m really excited! The trip includes:
Some truly amazing Eco lodges run by a host of interesting, knowledgeable, and friendly people.
Landscapes ranging from deep jungle rivers, to deserted tropical beaches, to remote islands.
And finally activities including rafting (inluding a very remote river that is run in 4 person "mini-me´s"), sea kayaking, snorkeling, horse back riding, a canopy tour, swimming, and of course plenty of time to sit in a hammock with your favorite drink and contemplate the beautiful settings.

We will finish up the details when I get back in March and we should have it up on the web by the end of the month.

P.S. - There is no spell check on this computer so I apoligize for the many spelling errors!

Northern California and Southern Oregon Snow pack Update
Things are looking very good for the 2006 rafting season! Here is how the snow pack looks for each of our rivers:
The California Salmon and Scott: It is hard to get an exact percentage for these two drainages but, judging by the drainages around them, we are guessing the that the snow pack is around 160% of normal! This means great May water and, barring an extended heat wave or drought, the Cal Salmon season should last well past the second week in June.
The Owyhee River: The snowpack is at 118% of normal. This is wonderful, especially considering how the last two years have been. The Owyhee should run and we are excited for our middle and lower trips.
The Klamath River: The Klamath River has a massive drainage and the snow pack is a HUGE 154% of average above the Upper K. With the snow and all this rain it should mean some sweet "2 Gun" days (two generators, more water) this summer on the Upper Klamath.
The Rogue River: The snowpack is at 125% of normal on the Rogue. The Rogue is always at a fun water level, but a little more never hurts!

More Website updates: On a side note we have made a few more web improvements. We have a new Momentum Rafting News page. The page also includes rafting news from other sources in Oregon and California. We have also added a Medford Oregon Rafting page.

Our 2006 Winter Rafting Newsletter is out
The winter Newsletter is out. It has lots of info on our spring trips and our new river trips for 06.
We have had a crazy winter so far with the rain, snow, and flooding. But it should make for an amazing spring rafting season. Our Cal Salmon season is already starting to book up and we are really excited about our middle Owyhee trip. You can read the whole newsletter here.

Since it is MLK Day here are some wonderful quotes from the man himself:

"Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true."

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. "

"Ten thousand fools proclaim themselves into obscurity, while one wise man forgets himself into immortality. "

Website Updates
We just finished updating our website for 06. The Intro page has lots of new pictures. If you hit refresh on your browser it will cycle through them. We have a few new pages; a Medford Oregon Rafting Page, and a Specialty Rafting page. There also new photos and small updates throughout the site. Hope everyone is having a great winter !

River quote
"What makes a river so restful to people is that it doesn't have any doubt - it is sure to get where it is going, and it doesn't want to go anywhere else."

The Last Days Of Spring Rafting
We have had an amazing spring rafting season and as always we are sad to see the end in site. We have had some of our best days on the water ever this year on the California Salmon. We caught the water at a perfect level Memorial day and got to run the Nordheimer stretch at near "6 feet" on the gage (BIG fun). It was a trip to remember. We still have another week or two for warm weather trips there so if you have the time check it out.
The good news is of course the weather is getting hotter and we are gearing up for our summer rivers. Our Upper Klamath trips are becoming more frequent and flows from the "bigger" generator have been great. We just also just finished a trip on the Lower Klamath and the canyon looks beautiful, fresh and clean from the high winter water and all the rain. It is going to be great summer.

Our Crazy Spring Rafting Weather!
For those of you who have not noticed the Southern Oregon / Northern California area has been going through a crazy spring. Tons of rain and cool weather. While there have been reports of severely depressed people for us it has been wonderful- there is water everywhere! We have been very lucky with most of our spring trips and found pockets of great weather. We have also enjoyed a rare "extremely high" water California Salmon trip- very very exciting. But, what this really means is that we will be able to run the Cal salmon well into June! We still have room on the first 2 weekends in June. This is a great time to visit this canyon. The water is that startling emerald green color, the level is fun but not too high, and the weather is amazing (hot and sunny days and warm nights). This place is a wonderland, don't wait until next year! Check out the California Salmon rafting page for info and June discounts.

All About Rivers Website
Brad Goettemoeller has remodeled his "All About Rivers" website and it now includes a whole section on river rafting trips and tours for people looking to go commercial rafting anywhere in the U.S. You can search for rivers by state, difficulty, and season and each river page lists the outfitters that offer trips on that section. Many outfitters also have extensive write ups and links to their sites (You can visit Momentum's All About Rivers page here). The site also includes information for kayakers and American Whitewater links and Blogs. The All About Rivers website is a wonderful tool, check it out if you have yet to see or use it!

River and Rafting Quotes
"I have never seen a river that I could not love. Moving water…has a fascinating vitality. It has power and grace and associations. It has a thousand colors and a thousand shapes, yet it follows laws so definite that the tiniest streamlet is an exact replica of a great river."

Roderick Haig-Brown

River and Rafting Quotes
I have decided to post an occasional river quote. Almost anyone who has spent time on or by rivers feels some sort of strong connection and it is wonderful when these connections are expressed so eloquently. If you have one that you like please e-mail it to me at pete@momentumriverexpeditions.com and I will post it.
I am going to start with a well known but beautiful one:

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops -- under the rocks are the words and some of the words are theirs."

Norman Maclean,
from "A River Runs Through It"

Yoga on the River Trips
Information on our Yoga on the River trips is now up and you can read more about them here. The combination of Yoga and time on the river make for an amazing experience. We have a Lower Klamath Yoga trip scheduled for September 17th and 18th. Other dates are available for small groups and we can also do Yoga trips on any of our California and Oregon Rivers.
In other news The California Salmon drainage continues to get more snow. There are still spaces open in May and early June for one of the best river trips in the country.

A Couple Of Quotes From The 2005 Trip To Chile's Futaleufu
"I really wanted to thank you for such memories. This was such an amazing trip! Even better than you had described! I have watched the video about 3 times now and just showed some parts at work....like my great ducky swim with Sarah! It was just great!!!"

"that trip was so amazing! Every part of it!!!....everything rocked and was better than I could have imagined!"

Southern Oregon and Northern California Snowpack
I just want to give a quick update on the snowpack in our area. As most people know the California snowpack looks great which means our spring rafting on our Northern California rivers should be spectacular.
The northern Oregon and Washington snowpack is not looking so hot. We are kind of in the middle here in Southern Oregon. While the overall snowpack here is below average it should not have an effect on our Rogue and Upper Klamath rafting trips. This is because both of these rivers are reservoir fed dam release stretches and there is plenty of water stored for a great season. In fact the Upper Klamath should have higher peaking flows then last year because the larger of the two turbines that feed water back into the river will be in operation.
So, overall it looks like we will have a perfect spring season in Northern California and another season of the most exciting summer whitewater in the west on the Upper K!

2005 on Chile`s Futaleufu River
Hello all! I am writing from Puerto Varas, Chile having just finished this years trip to Patagonia's Futaleufu Valley. I tore myself away from an afternoon of drinking coffee along an amazing volcano ringed glacial lake. The trip was amazing and the magic of the place never stops surprising me. It is truly one of the great places on earth. We will be posting pictures soon along with quotes from some of the people who joined us. I will also be adding next years dates to the Futaleufu Rafting page in the very near future. We are also looking into doing a multi-sport trip to Costa Rica in early winter.
When I get back we will be really starting to gear up for the spring California and Oregon rafting season. In the next week or so I will be adding extra info on trips including on a rare planned trip to the remote Middle Owyhee (snowpack dependent). Also there is less then a month left to get our pre-season rafting discount.

Friday, February 04, 2005

Snow Pack on the California Salmon River
The Snow pack on the Cal Salmon is already at 140%! This means we should have an amazing season on one of the top rivers in the Unites States. Check out the California Salmon Rafting page for more information and trip dates. Don't forget that we are offering a 15% pre-season discount for all Northern California or Oregon rafting trips booked by April 1st.
